Best Solar Fairy Lights Australia: What to Look for Before You Buy
Best Solar Fairy Lights Australia: What to Look for Before You Buy
Solar fairy lights are one of the easiest ways to transform an Australian garden. There’s no electrician, no power point and no extension lead required. Simply position the solar panel where it receives good sunlight and let the sun do the rest.
But not all solar fairy lights are created equal.
Prices vary considerably, and when you're comparing products online it can be difficult to know exactly what you're getting. Two sets may both be described as "warm white solar fairy lights", yet have very different cable construction, waterproof ratings, battery capacity and expected run times.
So how do you compare solar fairy lights, and what specifications actually matter?
Here are the things we recommend looking at before you buy.
1. Check the Actual Waterproof Rating
"Outdoor", "weather resistant" and "waterproof" can mean very different things.
The easiest way to compare outdoor lighting is to look for its IP rating.
For example:
- IP44 – protected against splashing water
- IP65 – protected against water jets and suitable for exposed outdoor use
- IP68 – a considerably higher level of protection against water ingress
Our Solar Fairy Lights are IP65 rated.
The Pro Series is our choice for more demanding installations where lights will remain outdoors permanently, including large trees, gardens, hospitality venues and commercial landscapes.
If a retailer describes lights as weatherproof but doesn't state the IP rating for the particular product you're considering, it's worth asking before purchasing. Note that if they are IP44 this is 'shower resistant' so if you are installing outdoors you'll be expecting rain which is more suited to IP65.
2. Look at Battery Performance – Not Just Charging Time
One of the biggest differences between solar fairy lights is how long they can operate once the battery is fully charged.
This becomes particularly important during periods of cloudy weather when the solar panel may not receive a full day of direct sunshine.
Our Solar Seed Fairy Lights provide 12+ hours of illumination from a fully charged battery, making them ideal for residential gardens and evening entertaining.
Our Pro Series Solar Fairy Lights can operate for approximately 6–7 days from a fully charged battery.
That additional battery capacity can make a significant difference for permanent installations, hospitality venues and larger gardens where consistent lighting is important.
3. Consider Whether Solar Is the Only Way to Charge
Most solar fairy lights rely entirely on their solar panel.
That's perfectly suitable for many residential applications, but what happens after several cloudy days – or if you need your lights working reliably for an event?
Our Pro Series Solar Fairy Lights include USB charging as well as solar charging.
You can charge the battery via USB before an event, during extended periods of poor weather or simply whenever you want the reassurance of starting with a fully charged battery.
For wedding venues, restaurants, accommodation properties and commercial installations, this can be particularly useful.
4. What Is the Cable Actually Made From?
The cable is another important difference that isn't always obvious from product photos.
Our two solar ranges deliberately use different cable construction because they're designed for different applications.
Solar Seed Fairy Lights
Our Seed Lights use ultra-fine copper wire.
It's lightweight, highly flexible and discreet during the day, making it perfect for wrapping around tree trunks and branches, weaving through hedges and styling pergolas, pots and outdoor décor.
Pro Series Solar Fairy Lights
Our Pro Series uses a heavy-duty black PVC cable.
It's designed for greater durability and more permanent outdoor installations, making it our preferred option for mature trees, large gardens, hospitality spaces, wedding venues and commercial landscapes.
Neither is necessarily "better" for every installation – the important thing is choosing the right construction for where you're putting the lights.
5. What Does "Warm White" Actually Mean?
You'll see the words warm white used across most decorative lighting websites.
But warm white isn't one exact colour.
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K), and two products described as warm white can look noticeably different when illuminated.
One may produce a soft golden glow while another can appear considerably whiter.
If creating a particular ambience is important to you, or you're matching your new lights with existing outdoor lighting, check whether the retailer provides an actual colour temperature rather than simply describing the lights as "warm white".
All our lights feature 2700k and are a warm white glow.
6. Do You Get a Remote Control?
A remote might not seem particularly important when you're installing your lights, but it becomes much more useful once they're wrapped several metres up a mature tree.
Our Pro Series Solar Fairy Lights include a remote control, allowing you to operate the lights without needing to access the solar panel each time.
For larger and more permanent installations, it's a feature we think is well worth considering.
Love Your Lights vs SolaGarden Solar Fairy Lights
SolaGarden is another popular Australian retailer you may come across when researching solar fairy lights.
So how do their Fairy String Lights compare with our Solar Seed and Pro Series?
Based on the product specifications published by each company, here's what we can compare.
| Love Your Lights – Seed | Love Your Lights – Pro Series | SolaGarden Fairy String Lights | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light type | Solar fairy lights | Heavy-duty solar fairy lights | Solar fairy lights |
| Cable | Fine copper wire | Heavy-duty black PVC | Not specified |
| IP rating | IP65 | IP68 | Specific product rating not stated* |
| Battery performance | 12+ hours | Approx. 6–7 days | Approx. 6–8 hours |
| Charging | Solar | Solar + USB | Solar |
| Remote control | No | Yes | Not specified |
| Automatic dusk operation | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Warm white | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Commercial applications | Primarily residential/decorative | Residential + commercial | Not specifically stated |
| Warranty | Love Your Lights 12 month warranty | Love Your Lights 12 month warranty | Lifetime replacement warranty |
SolaGarden currently states that every light it sells is either IP44 or IP65 weather resistant. However, at the time of writing, we couldn't find which of these ratings specifically applies to its Fairy String Lights.
SolaGarden states that its Fairy String Lights require approximately 5–8 hours of sunshine to charge and provide around 6–8 hours of illumination once fully charged.
SolaGarden also offers a lifetime replacement warranty, which is a significant benefit and something you should absolutely consider when comparing products.
What isn't currently specified on its Fairy String Lights product page is information such as the cable material, specific IP rating or battery capacity.
And that's why we believe specifications matter.
Which Solar Fairy Lights Are Best?
There isn't one solar fairy light that's right for every garden.
If you're looking for affordable, decorative lighting for a residential garden, there are plenty of solar fairy lights available in Australia.
If you want a delicate light that's easy to wrap around trees, hedges and garden features, we'd recommend our Solar Seed Fairy Lights. Their fine copper wire virtually disappears during the day while providing 12+ hours of illumination from a full charge.
For larger trees, permanent installations or situations where reliability and durability are more important, we'd recommend our Pro Series Solar Fairy Lights.
The combination of:
- IP65 waterproofing
- Heavy-duty PVC cable
- 6–7 days of illumination from a full battery
- Solar + USB charging
- Remote control
- Residential and commercial suitability
makes the Pro Series a very different product from a standard decorative solar fairy light.
Price vs Performance
It's tempting to compare solar fairy lights based on price and length alone.
A 50m set for $120 will naturally look like better value than a more expensive 50m set.
But 50 metres doesn't tell you what you're actually buying.
Before comparing prices, look at the cable construction, waterproof rating, battery performance, charging options, controls and warranty.
For a small decorative installation, you may not need commercial-grade construction or several days of battery capacity.
For a mature tree, permanent installation, wedding venue or hospitality space, those specifications can become much more important.
Our Advice? Compare the Specs
We're big believers in making it easy to understand exactly what you're buying.
Before choosing any solar fairy lights, ask:
-
What is the IP rating?
What is the cable made from?
How long will they run from a full battery?
Can the battery be charged another way if there's not enough sun?
Is there a remote control?
What shade of warm white will I actually receive?
Are they designed for temporary decorative use or permanent installation?
What warranty and support are included? Lifetime Warranty - read the terms and conditions.
Once you know those answers, comparing solar fairy lights becomes much easier.
At Love Your Lights, we've created two solar ranges because different installations need different solutions.
Choose Solar Seed Fairy Lights for lightweight, flexible decorative lighting around the home and garden.
Choose Pro Series Solar Fairy Lights when you want maximum durability, greater battery capacity and more control for a long-term residential or commercial installation.
Because the best solar fairy lights aren't necessarily the cheapest or the most expensive.
They're the ones designed for the job you need them to do.
